This February marked the celebration of Black History Month in the North America, a month dedicated to reflecting and celebrating the significant societal contributions of the African American community. As a firm, JPMorgan Chase strives to ensure we are doing our part in “Empowering Dreams and Transforming the Communities” we serve and support. This aspect of our firm is seen through our $30 million commitment to support Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), their students, and the various programs that give them the exposure to firmwide career opportunities. The Tech for Social Good team believes that the success of the firm depends on the success of the communities we serve. Through social impact initiatives, we are steadfast in our commitment to do good for our business, consumer clients, and our talent. Tech for Social Good’s human centered programming corrals the passion, power, and skills of our tech workforce to serve our communities.

Within the suite of Tech for Social Good programming, Data for Good helps champion the firm’s commitment to HBCUs, as well as the innovation of the social sector via data science. Through hackathon-style events,  Data for Good brings together university students to creatively solve real-world social challenges using data analysis. This event also connects students interested in pursuing careers in technology and data science with JPMorgan Chase volunteers, aligning them with a nonprofit to ideate on technology solutions that will help achieve their organizational mission.

In 2023, Tech for Social Good welcomed students across the United States for the grand kick-off of Data for Good – HBCU Student Edition. The hackathon hosted 45 students, of which 40% hailed from HBCUs. With the help of 65 passionate JPMorgan Chase volunteers, the students delivered data-driven insights and recommendations to Starting with Today, a Black woman-founded nonprofit that provides wellness services and programming to Washington, D.C. neighborhoods and violence intervention in areas that have been impacted by gentrification and demographic related changes.

This April, the Tech for Social Good’s Data for Good team will partner with Advancing Black Pathways for the second HBCU Student Edition of the event. Many HBCUs do not offer Data Science as a full-time student major, so this event aims to provide the support needed to jumpstart their careers. This iteration of the event will introduce students to technical and interpersonal workshops, where they will also have the opportunity to network with JPMorgan Chase HBCU alumni and hear from JPMorgan Chase senior leadership.

As we look forward to this event, it is important to remember that partnerships and initiatives such as Tech for Social Good’s Data for Good help shine a light on the initiatives that are being driven and executed in support of communities to help make dreams possible everywhere. Data for Good Program Manager, Tiana Morris recounts, “representation matters: you can’t be what you can’t see.”
